Match Analysis: Arsenal Defensive Problems Continue As They Lost To Chelsea in Europa Finals



Arsenal had one of the worst nights yesterday in Baku, Azerbaijan. It's now evident that Arsenal will be playing Europa League for the 2nd season after failing to make it to the top four last season. Let's see the possible reasons why Arsenal lost to Chelsea:

1. Poor Build-Up.

Arsenal were seen even before the match, the line-up communicated fluently that they wanted to control the midfield. Chelsea is one the teams with a strong midfield in the Premier League. Although it seems simple to by-pass it, care must be done to win this. Also, the midfield is the centre of 'Sarriball'. So, Arsenal wanted to stop and neutralize the midfield by playing wingbacks in the midfield. They made it perfectly in the first half unknowing that Sarri had another option.



2. Few Arsenal Players in The Chelsea Box.

It's only Lacazette in the box and Aubameyang's cross goes wide no Arsenal player to chase the ball. 

This is the main reason why Arsenal lost several matches in the Premier League and it haunted them yesterday. Arsenal strikers are rarely in the box when Arsenal had possession. It's evidently from the number of crosses made to the box. Arsenal made a total of 17 and only two of these found the target. So you can see they were few in the box hence leading to wasting of crosses in the opposition box.


3. Chelsea's aggressive Press.

Unlike Arsenal, Chelsea ran up and down to regain possession quickly compared to Arsenal. This is one reason why Arsenal lost possession quickly and gave time for Chelsea to build up their game play.

4. Easy Dispossession By Arsenal Players.
Arsenal lost possession easily compared to Chelsea.They lost possession 17 times while Chelsea lost only 8 times. This shows that Arsenal players were not composed with the ball. Ocassionaly, we saw Mesut Ozil trying to find his team-mates who end up losing possession. when you keep losing possession easily, you give your opponent time and chance to hit you back.

5. Poor Defensive Organisation.
 3v3 inside Arsenal's box but Pedro remains unmarked at the edge of the box. He gets a cut-back from Hazard and scores. 

Arsenal's defence got exposed easily hence giving opportunity for Chelsea to score fast goals. This is the main problem haunting Arsenal right now. We saw them struggling during their last Premier League matches. There was no communication between the midfield and the defence. This left them exposed most of the time.

Catenaccio involves a defensive play, tight marking of opponents and aggressive fouling. Mostly, this tactic was used to defend goal margins.
