Each year there are university and college graduates who complain about joblessness in Kenya. Most of the people affected are the youths. Here are some of the reasons behind the joblessness among the Kenyan youths:

1. Most youths value managerial courses than technical courses.

According to the research I conducted, 8/10 youths would prefer working in an office as a manager/supervisor. When people jump in to these courses, they become flooded and hard to get jobs. Currently, Business Management is the most affected course.

2. 80% of the Kenyan youths choose careers because of the influence from their parents.

It isn't bad for  parents to choose careers for their sons and daughters. But the question is:  will the children fall in love with the course? This is where most Kenyan parents fail to establish strong foundation for their children's future. It is so sad to see a child being forced to study a course which he/she has no interest in it. Parents should analyze their children and know their capability. The best advice to the parents they should discuss careers with their children.

3. Most youths don't value their talents.

Many people have the mentality that 'education will grant them jobs' which is totally wrong. Being educated does not mean that it is a leeway to getting work. It is just a single step from the long journey of getting a job. I know of a colleague who used to perform comedy in our church and now he owns a paying you tube account plus shows that are well-paid. There arw so many talents that when combined with just basic education can make you earn handsomely. It's time to utilise your talent and earning from it!

4. Employers like people with experience.

This is the biggest challenge when a Kenyan youth is seeking for a job. Most Kenyan youths have been disappointed by newspapers adverts and online ads which read 'Workers needed with 2 years experience'. This is so sad to miss an opportunity by lacking experience.

Our government is trying it's best to make sure all youths in Kenya can depend themselves by 2030. Also, the youths should start venturing on online work and extract earning from the internet. They should look for other opportunities apart from being employed. Start depending on yourself from today!
