Tactical Analysis: Liverpool's Pressing Techniques Under Jurgen Klopp.
Pressing is Liverpool's strongest weapon which they use to demolish their opponents. This game was evolved under Jurgen Klopp. Due to the presence of fast paced forwards, Liverpool are able to harass opponents deep in their own half and this won Jurgen Klopp two trophies, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Supercup.
According to Nouman who is a football coach and football analyst, Liverpool press in two different ways:
1. Positional pressing
2. Hard Press.
Positional Pressing.
In this type of pressing, Liverpool wingers position themselves diagonally between the Centre Backs and Wing Backs. This is to block the opposition's passing lanes. Also, the Centre Forward positions himself between the Centre Back/Goalkeeper and Defending Midfielder. This leaves one of their DM or Central Midfielder free to cover the defence.
This is done carefully as they still take care of their positions not to forget them. Mostly, it is the work of the forwards i.e Salah, Mane and Firmino and sometimes the midfielders i.e Milner, Keita and Wijnaldum. This form of pressing can be overturned by having defenders who are good at the ball.
The Hard Press.
Hard press is the pressing in numbers to suffocate the opponent and force them to make mistakes. It is somehow similar to Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan in the 1980's.
In Arrigo Sacchi's tactic, all players moved forward to press the opponents in numbers to regain possession. On this type of pressing, players are not concerned with their positions. They press up high in numbers provided they regain possession.
The biggest disadvantage of this tactic is players will get exhausted quickly. If they play on like this, they will not have the strength to play the last 20-30 minutes of the game. In order to avoid this, Liverpool use this tactic in the first 10 minutes of both halves. Liverpool are always dangerous in the opening minutes because of this tactic.

Henderson has not been marked so he roams in front of the defence to provide a cover while Salah and Mane marked the CBs and WBs. |
