Pre-Match Analysis: What Chelsea Should Improve Ahead Of UEFA Super Cup Against Liverpool.
Liverpool and Chelsea will lock horn today at BJK Vodafone Park in Istanbul for the UEFA Supercup 2019/20 season. As I mentioned earlier on my previous analysis (between Chelsea and Man United), Chelsea always like to attack and defend as a close unit. This means that Chelsea's defensive line is always high up the pitch to support the press.
Here are the things that they should improve on:
Maintain a deep defensive line.
A standard or deep defensive line will work when playing against Liverpool because they have players who have high passing accuracy eg Alison Becker and Virgil van Dijk. These two have long range and high accuracy so they might cause problems to Chelsea's high defence.
The presence of Salah and Mane too who are good on timely runs to the final third after neing released by Alison or Van Dijk will punish Chelsea too.
They Should be confident to play from the back.
Liverpool are the best team in Europe when it comes to play from the back. I will talk about their pressing techniques in detail during my next analysis. As we saw in their previous game vs Man Utd, Zouma passed the ball to Martial. So they should improve on this as Liverpool are more deadly in pressing than Man United.
Try to hit Liverpool on Transitions.
Liverpool like to use the wing backs (Alexander Arnold and Robertson) to attack and make crosses as Salah and Mane squeze deep in the Center-back position to create spaces on the flanks. If Chelsea would be quick enough, they will find Robertson and Arnold out of their positions hence they can get goals through this technique.
They should watch out cut-backs and minus crosses in the box.
Almost a quarter of Liverpool's goals last season were score through this technique. The wing backs always make crosses either the striker (Firmino, Salah and Mane) to tap in a goal or a cut-back for the strikers or midfielders to make a one touch finish.
For real this will be a mouth-watering match as Chelsea are looking to revive their form while Liverpool are set to win their first silverware this season. Who will win this match? Comment below and let me know!

Lampard should include players who are quick like Willian and Pedro. They should stay wide in order to hit Liverpool in transitions. Image:The National |
