MONDAY FOOTBALL: Arsenal Vs Totenham Post-Match Analysis.
It was a fascinating match especially the way two managers from North-London played chess against each other. Arsenal lined up in their traditional 4-3-3 formation but shifted to 2-1-2-5 with possession. On the other hand, Totenham lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with a diamond-shapped midfield. This was to stop central attacks from Arsenal.
During the first ten minutes, Arsenal had total control on the game but after that, things turned against them for the rest of first half. Totenham's intention since the kick-off whistle was to sit back and hit Arsenal on transitions.
They achieved causing problems to Arsenal's defence through the quick pace from Son Heung-Min who is an expert too on late runs behind defenders. Arsenal's defence was high because Unai likes his team to play within 15-20 metres from the forward to defence.
Tactics Used.
Arsenal tried to create central overloads in Spurs defence. Aubameyang and Pepe played narrow hence making Spurs defence to be narrow too. This enabled Arsenal's fullbacks to occupy the wide areas and launch crosses from there.
On the other hand, Spurs wanted to control the midfield hence they tried to build up from the back and Cissoko always launched attacks during the build up phase. Arsenal tried to mark Cissoko hence they forced Hugo Loris to use long balls which mostly were miscalculated.
Spurs' Harry Kane often dropped deep in the midfield to help Winks, Lamella, Eriksen and Cissoko. When Kane dropped, one of the two Arsenal's centre-backs follkwed him this creating space behind for Son to occupy.
Guendouzi did his best especially in making long passes when they were needed. Unai knew why this youngster should get enough game time.
Indeed, it was an interesting match to watch as Arsenal's substitutes; Mikhitaryan and Ceballos brought impact on the game. Mikhi gave Arsenal reinforcement to press Spurs defence higher on the pitch.
