Manchester United vs PSG match analysis
Man United went down 2-0 at Old Trafford under their acting manager Ole Gunnar Solsksjaer in the UCL tie against Paris Saint Germain. Both teams looked well-prepared for this match. Main target for PSG was to stop Paul Pogba's play making which Tuchel said in a pre-match interview he was a dangerous player. Man United used a 4-3-3 with possession and shifted to 4-1-4-1 without possession. On the other hand, PSG lined up in a 3-4-3 formation and turned to 4-4-2 without possession. Let's see what were the reasons behind Man United's defeat:
1. High Defensive line
Man United's defensive line pushed high to the pitch leaving a wide space behind them. A good example was Luke Shaw who liked to press so high and was mostly caught out of his position. PSG used Kylian Mbappe and Di Maria's fast pace to punish Man United.
2.Narrow defence.
Man United's defence was too narrow which enabled Dani Alvez and Bernat to exploit those wide spaces and make crosses in the danger zone.
3.Big gap between the midfield and defence.
As Man United shifted to 4-1-4-1 formation, Nemanja Matic was all alone in the midfield. Di Maria and Mbappe used to attract opposition defenders and moved them out of their positions. Also we saw in the match, Matic found himself in a 1 v 3 situation which made United's midfield to be easily by-passed. This was the main reason for United's defeat as the defence lacked protection from the midfield.
4. Tight man-marking of Paul Pogba.
Pogba completes atleast 60 passes per game but on this day he completed only 31.
This makes him the main man in Man United's attacking structure. If we look at some previous matches, Pogba has helped in most goals than any Man United player hence making him an important person in the team. Tuchel knew this and made Marquinhos to mark Pogba so tightly everywhere he went. That's why Pogba was unable to create chances for Man United.
CONCLUSION:
Man United should try to keep their defenders intact or look for other ways to prevent a high defensive line. Also, Ole Gunnar should try to have other alternatives when it comes to coaching. He should have told Herrera to drop and help Matic on the midfield thus shift to a 4-2-3-1 formation. What is your prediction when Manchester United visit PSG at Parc de Princes?
