Liverpool vs Barcelona Post-Match Analysis.
It was a night Lionel Messi, his colleagues and the whole Barcelona fraternity would not forget. Firstly, the ex-Liverpool players(Coutinho and Suarez) were coldly received. The night seemed unusual for the fans, coach and the players at large. Liverpool fans were chanting "Never give up"and glorifying their team. They kept reminding Messi, "This is Anfield!" Here are some of the reasons behind Barca's loss:
Messi's reaction after losing 4-0 |
Overconfidence
Barcelona knew that they had qualified and Liverpool could not overturn the 3 goal deficit. We saw it since the first whistle Barcelona were sluggish. They were prone to mistake and lazy. Liverpool took the charge and punished them.
Poor Defensive Organisation
Jordi Alba's mistakes gifted Liverpool an early goal through Origi. From there, many errors followed. In Wijnaldum's second goal, Barcelona had 5 players in the box against Liverpool's 3. They failed to organise themselves hence leaving them exposed. When Wijnaldum scored the 3rd goal 2minutes later, it was 8 Barcelona players in the box vs Liverpool's 4. Even Divock Origi's winner, there was no organisation and he scored. They didn't man mark him and ended up being punished. This was Barcelona's most grave mistake in this game.
3v1 situation. A perfect example of poor organisation of Barcelona's defence. |
Barcelona failed to man mark Origi.
Origi was left unmarked and scored the winner. Barcelona's defence was poorly organised. |
Liverpool Pressing Technique
As I mentioned in my previous Barcelona v Liverpool analysis, Liverpool have the best pressing techniques in Europe. They pressed in numbers. Everywhere they pressed they were not less than 3. Even there was a time Messi was pressed by 5 Liverpool's players. This tactic destroyed Barca's build up phase forcing them to go long and forced them to make mistakes.
Covering of Segio Busquets.
Here, Jurgen Klopp did his assignment very well. He knew that Busquets was the heart of Barcelona's build up and attack. They marked and pressed him to make sure he does not create chances. Busquets covering led to few passes in the oppositional half. Messi who used to get more balls from Busquets was affected and was less dangerous..
This match was fascinating. It was a miracle for Liverpool to turn the table around. But you need to quote me ,'When Barcelona start a Champions League quarter or semi-final at home, they are going to lost the tie. They will only proceed if they start away match.'
Last season, Barcelona were eliminated from the UCL quarter finals by AS Roma in Italy and this season it happened with Liverpool. At least, Liverpool's goalkeeper Alison Becker has eliminated Barcelona twice. With AS Roma and now Liverpool. For now, Liverpool are awaiting either Ajax or Totenham to meet in Madrid for the UCL finals.
