Post-Match Analysis: Has Norwich Disposed Man City's Weaknesses?
It was one of the awful nights for Pep's squard leave alone the UCL night versus Totenham at home. Last Saturday, City dominated the game in everything from shots on target to possession and passing accuracy. But what was the Cityzen's mistakes?
Is it leaving Kevin De Bruyne on the bench? Or can it be Aymeric Larpote's injury? Or is it that Pep did not sign Vincent Kompany's replacement?Absolutely not! There are more than these two reasons behind the defeat. We cannot blame their defensive mistakes because they are humans too. For a football analysist, there is just more than what the fans think. Here are Man City's weaknesses they showed versus Norwich:
1. Man City are poor to defend on set-pieces and corners.
By leaving McClean to hang that free-header alone, it clearly showed that City are not that good to defend corners and set-pieces. This is not the only time City were punished from corner and set-piece. Even Totenham's Lucas Moura equalizer was a free header and the match ended a 2-2 draw. With Larpote out with injury, City are poorer on this area.
2. City are not good in utilising corners.
Manchester City get 6.5 average corners per game since the past two seasons. On their match against Norwich, Man City got 16 corners with zero impact. On the other hand, Norwich got 3 corners and got one goal from the corner kicks. It just proves how poor Pep's City are in utilising corners.
3. Lack of being more clinical infront of the goal.
Man City should be more clinical in the opposition third to improve their conversion rate. Man City had 10 shots on target against the Cranaries (Norwich) 3 which were all goals. Norwich on this game had a conversion rate of 60% than Man City's 11.1%.
That shows clearly that Manchester City are not being clinical infront of the goal.
4. Pep's attacking philosophy with Man City.
I won't talk much on this now. I will give you a deep analysis on Manchester City's attacking philosophy on my next analysis. When attacking, Man City take 2-3-5 formation. This idea is not bad but your squard especially in the midfield and forward should be more than good with the ball.
When they lose possession, this is where problem arises. If the opposition's wingers stay up and wide, they can hit City on transitions. So this is what City are trying to do to prevent the counter-attacks, press the opposition for 7 seconds to regain possesion failure to which they will return to their defensive phase. Another approach is to foul the opponent by pulling his jersey or any other slight foul.
Those are just some few mistakes Manchester City made when they took on Norwich on Saturday. Will they improve to catch up with Liverpool who are 5 points clear on the table? Comment below and let me know!
