Manchester United Stun Chelsea In A Tough EPL Encounter. Post-Match Analysis.

Chelsea lost to Manchester United in a match filled with VAR drama. Frank Lampard's men were in total control of the match at the Stamford Bridge despite losing the match.

Chelsea lined up in their normal 4-3-3 formation with N'golo Kante, Jorginho, and Mateo Kovačić were in charge of the midfield. Kanté was substituted during the 12th minute because of an injury and Mount came in. Due to Tammy Abraham's injury, Mitchy Batshuayi stepped up to take his place as the main striker. This was a 4-1-4-1 formation on the ground.

Manchester United on the other hand, lined up in 3-4-2-1 formation which shifted to 4-5-1 on the field. Also, Manchester United missed their striker, Marcus Rashford who is still injured.

Why Chelsea lost:

1. Chelsea were not clinical in front of the goal.

Chelsea wasted many chances which later haunted them. Mitchy Batshuayi blew away 2 clear goalscoring chances. Chelsea made a total of 17 shots. 10 blocked shots, 6 off target and only one on target. Their wastefulness made them pay by conceding twice.

On the other hand, Manchester United got only 9 shots of which 3 were on target 2 blocked and 4 off target. Overall, Manchester United had a better conversion rate than Chelsea.

2. Chelsea's poor defending of Corner and set-pieces.

Chelsea is among the worst teams to defend corner kicks and set-pieces in the Premier League. During this game, Chelsea conceded one goal from a corner.  Harry Maguire found the back of the net from a corner kick.

3. Manchester United's Pressing in numbers.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men pressed Chelsea in numbers hence leading them to making mistakes. This tactic helped them a lot as they recovered lost possession and launched attacks.

4. Chelsea's Poor man-marking.

During Manchester United's opener goal from Anthony Martial, Rudiger was nowhere to be seen to mark him thus forcing Christensen to leave his position to cover up Martial. Christensen was coming from an injury treatment so it was Rudiger who was supposed to mark Martial.

5. Machester United's midfield overloads.

Ole Gunnar had done his assignement very well as he knew Chelsea's game mainly depended on the midfield to launch attacks. Bruno Fernandez/Fred marked Jorginho when Chelsea started the ball from the back. This forced Caballero to use long balls.

Lampard saw this and made Kovacic to drop just behind Jorginho on the left side where a 3V2 was formed.  Recce James, Kovačić and Willian formed an overload against Wan Bissaka and E.  Bailey. This tactic worked during the build up phase. The same was happening on the left flank where Shaw and Brandon Williams were playing.

CONCLUSION:

Despite Chelsea's domination,  still it wasn't enough for them to claim a point from United who utilised their chances well. It is clear now Chelsea should sign a back up striker for  Tammy Abrahams because Mitchy Batshuayi isn't clinical enough. Thank you guys for visiting my blog, don't forget to subscribe. Thank you!
